In September 2023, the design for the redevelopment of the Hofplaats and the new public entrance to the House of Representatives was presented. In the future, visitors will enter through a pavilion on the Hofplaats that leads to an underground entrance. The preliminary design has since been further developed into a Technical Design, in which colour, materials, and detailing have been carefully defined.
Before the renovation, the House of Representatives welcomed around 300,000 visitors each year. When parliament returns to the Binnenhof in 2031, that number is expected to grow to approximately 500,000 annually. The new entrance at the Hofplaats will accommodate this increase and organise the reception of visitors in a clear and future-proof way. Light and transparent – this best describes the entrance building. In the further development of the design, this open and welcoming character has been strengthened and refined.

The pavilion touches the Hofp#laats lightly, leaving space for greenery and a generous, open reception area. Around the building, Karres en Brands designed a pleasant place to stay for both visitors and residents of The Hague: a space where security, accessibility, and spatial quality come together. The planting design for the Hofplaats, as in other parts of the Binnenhof, was developed in collaboration with Climmy Schneider.
The new public entrance and the design of the Hofplaats are the result of an intensive collaboration between a broad team of experts and advisors, the House of Representatives, the Municipality of The Hague, local entrepreneurs, and residents. Together, they are working towards a welcoming and future-oriented entrance to the heart of our democracy
