More than ten years after winning the competition for the urban development of Naerheden in Hedehusene, Denmark, we returned to the district to see how the vision has matured over time.

What stands out today is the enduring strength of the landscape framework. From the outset, nature was not treated as an amenity but as the foundation for development. Green corridors, water systems, biodiversity and recreational routes were carefully woven into the urban structure, creating a resilient framework that continues to shape the area's growth.

Equally striking is the role of public space in fostering community. Squares, streets, parks and shared green spaces have become everyday meeting places that support social interaction and local identity. These spaces demonstrate how thoughtful urban design can strengthen both environmental sustainability and community life.

Naerheden shows the long-term value of designing with natural systems and creating places that evolve with their residents. Seeing the district flourish more than a decade later is a powerful reminder that successful urban development is measured not only by what is built, but by how people live, meet and grow together over time.
