Increasingly often our public space projects include security measures in to protect groups of people or buildings against hostile vehicles. But how do we achieve a secure space while staying away from invasive bollards and fences? How to gain in security, without losing the publicness of public space? In short: How to design for people with bad intentions?
Learning from each project, we combine lessons and ethical considerations in an overarching design research on ‘Security by Design’, now published on Landezine. In the article we argue that designing for people with good and bad intentions doesn’t have to be a contradiction. Instead, it can be an opportunity for open, social and healthy public space.
