Six international awards in the space of a few weeks! A result to be proud of — a wonderful recognition for the Passerelle Zwolle and the collaboration that underpins it.

The Passerelle has recently received an honourable mention at the WLA Awards, a platinum medal at the Houzee Awards, a special mention at the Architizer A+ Awards, a Silver Medal at the WAN Awards and first prize at the International Architecture Award 2026 organised by The European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies; the project is also a finalist in the prestigious World Architecture Festival Awards.

Since its opening in September 2025, the 130-metre-long Passerelle has provided a new link across the railway tracks in Zwolle. Yet it is emphatically more than just a way to get from A to B. The bridge, as it were, extends the city across the tracks: as both an elevated street and an elevated park. Greenery, seating areas, water and ever-changing sightlines make the crossing a place to stroll, linger and experience the city from a new perspective. At the same time, sustainability is literally at the heart of the design. The timber support structure and the bridge deck made of cross-laminated timber (CLT) result in 74 per cent fewer CO₂ emissions than a comparable steel bridge. The fact that it is precisely this interplay of infrastructure, landscape, sustainability and public space that is receiving such international acclaim makes these international accolades all the more special.

Above all, these are awards for a collective achievement. The Passerelle was realised by an integrated design team, with Karres and Brands acting as coordinating architects. Different disciplines, one shared ambition: to transform a necessary connection into a new landmark for Zwolle. Six international accolades for one exceptional bridge. The whole team can be proud of this.
