Exploratory phase of the KIJK dyke reinforcement project now complete

Over the past two years, Karres and Brands, in collaboration with Wageningen Environmental Research, has been exploring possibilities for the major dyke reinforcement project, KIJK. This project is particularly complex due to the numerous buildings along the dyke, many of which are historic monuments, and the fact that the dyke itself serves as an important connection for cars, bikes and trucks.

The exploratory phase consisted of design research into ideal solutions for the reinforcement of approximately ten kilometres of dyke between the towns of Gouderak, Ouderkerk aan den IJssel and Krimpen aan den IJssel. This research was carried out in three project phases: creating the spatial vision, assessing promising alternatives and describing the aesthetic requirements of the assignment. During this phase, we worked in close collaboration with the district water control board and a consortium of engineering firms.
