First milestone of the ‘Hart van Zuid’ area development

First milestone of the ‘Hart van Zuid’ area development

On January 22nd, the Swimming Pool Complex Rotterdam opened its doors to the public. The opening is the first milestone of the ‘Hart van Zuid’ area development. The swimming pool is built in the former municipal district office of Charlois. By transforming the existing building, we start the implementation of the sustainability aspect of the area development ‘Hart van Zuid’. The pool welcomes the recreational swimmer, but also offers all facilities for professional athletes. The pool complex is designed by Kraaijvanger Architects in collaboration with the ‘Hart van Zuid’ consortium (Ballast Nedam and Heijmans) and the Municipality of Rotterdam. The Swimming Pool Complex Rotterdam is an important catalyst for the overall development of the ‘Hart van Zuid’ area.

From 2013 onwards, karres+brands is working on the area development ‘Hart van Zuid’ in Rotterdam, which will be one of the largest urban development plans of our time. The area stretches over more than 60 hectares, includes a wide variety of functions (e.g. culture, sports, living, retail and education) and will have a phased development over the coming years. The project is expected to give a qualitative impulse to Rotterdam South and create more jobs and better amenities for the residents.

karres+brands is currently working on the designs of the public spaces and spatial structure of the area development. Coming months, the adjacent Kunsten building will start its construction, followed by the construction of the public space of the Gooilandsingel and the Annie M.G. Schmidt Square.
