karres+brands has been selected by the Province of Friesland and Dantumadiel Municipality to design the 11 hectare sized station area and transferium in Feanwâlden. The goal is to achieve unity and a high spatial quality which suits the local identity of the village. For the technical aspects of the assignment karres+brands is advised by engineering office Witteveen+Bos. 

The provincial road N356 forms since the 70s a barrier between the village of Feanwâlden and its station. With the construction of the Central Axis in 2016 the heavy traffic transiting the area will no longer pass through Feanwâlden, but around it. This change offers the opportunity for transforming the former infrastructural nodes along the Central Axis into safe, livable and connected clusters. To exploit such opportunities, the Municipalities of Tytsjerksteradiel, Dantumadiel together with the Frisian Province established the Kansen in Kernen (KIK) project. Its goal is the downgrading and redesigning of the existing provincial road en harnessing the opportunities brought forth by this intervention.

Along with the opportunity to reclaim the space between the station and Feanwâlden for the inhabitants, a new station building will mark the entrance to the village and along with the surrounding functions define a transferium for the larger Frisian province. karres+brands will draw up the designs for both public space as well as architectural objects.

Such an integral assignment is of great importance for the village and its surrounding. An open, transparent and participative design process is therefore extremely important. By establishing the Atelier Feanwâlden, were the work of the design team will regularly be showcased and open for discussion, we aim to give all stakeholders and interested inhabitants a chance to contribute and react, therefore being an integral part of the design process.
