Our proposal for the U5 station at Volkspark in Hamburg was awarded second prize last winter. As the northern gateway, the design naturally connects the station and the square with the century-old structure of the Altona Volkspark—adding a new chapter to its history.
The project addresses the challenge of designing a station that can facilitate both regular traffic and the large influx of visitors during major events. A multifunctional grid shapes the forecourt, guiding movement, managing rainwater, and offering flexible use spaces. Existing trees are preserved, and new multistem plantings are added to bring the green character of the Volkspark right up to the station. Lighting elements that branch out like trees create a welcoming atmosphere. Powered by solar panels, these elements provide a sustainable source of illumination and security.
