Today marks an important milestone in the transformation of Arnhem’s former post office: the festive start of construction for Rijkskantoor De Nieuwe Post. Together with partners, stakeholders, and future users, we celebrated the beginning of this ambitious redevelopment, which breathes new life into a historic site at the heart of the city, right next to Arnhem Central Station.
After a careful demolition and material harvesting phase—where resources were recovered for reuse—the construction of the new government office has officially begun. Led by Heijmans, and in close collaboration with Karres en Brands and Kraaijvanger, the project sets a new benchmark for adaptive reuse and sustainable building in the public sector.
The new Rijkskantoor will become a dynamic, future-proof workplace where heritage and innovation come together. Built with circular materials and a green design, the complex is centered around a shared courtyard garden: a green, naturally inspired biotope based on the landscape of the Veluweflank. With subtle topography and planting that includes various types of pine trees, ferns, and forest-like vegetation, the garden creates a lively, layered green environment. It enhances biodiversity, improves the microclimate, and offers a welcoming space for both users and visitors to meet and connect. By combining green roofs, re-used materials, and smart water management, De Nieuwe Post becomes more than just an office building. It will be a healthy, inspiring, and sustainable urban biotope, contributing to the quality and experience of Arnhem’s station area.
