Awarded 2nd prize for Veddel community center design

Karres en Brands has been awarded second prize in an international competition for the design of a new community center in Veddel, Hamburg. The jury praised the proposal for its sensitive urban approach and architectural clarity, highlighting the KiezKreuzgang—a central design element—as “a refuge for community and healing.” Carefully balancing old and new, the project establishes a strong spatial identity while responding thoughtfully to the site’s context and social needs.

Kreuzgang will serve as a sanctuary where well-being, healing, nature, and community converge. Drawing inspiration from the serene gardens of monasteries, the design embraces the core principles of a healing environment. KiezKreuzgang is a complete reinvention of the monastic grounds turning it into a contemporary space dedicated to community, culture, and healing.

Thematic gardens, vibrant greenery, and the interplay of natural light converge to create a serene and contemplative atmosphere. This space is designed to bring everyone together, cultivating a sense of belonging and connection among community members. The polyclinic will offer vital healthcare services, addressing the health needs of the community effectively. Simultaneously, the social program will foster opportunities for connection, support, and personal development, empowering individuals to engage and flourish in this inclusive environment.

Our design strengthens the presence of the existing church as the central element of a new ensemble of subtle volumes brought together by a unifying plinth. This approach allows the heritage structure to retain its significance by giving it the necessary space to breathe but also positioning it at the heart of a new ensemble formed together with the existing daycare building. The plinth becomes a key strategic element, clearly defining the spatial organization of the site and establishing a seamless transition between public, semi-public, and private areas. This arrangement ensures that the building does not simply coexist with its surroundings but actively engages with them, creating a balanced and harmonious relationship between old and new. Through this careful spatial choreography, the design fosters a sense of continuity and unity, enriching both the community and the architectural experience.

At the heart of the center will be comfort, privacy, and safety, with spaces designed for rest and solitude, while shared areas encourage community interaction. Sustainable design will seamlessly blend with nature, ensuring the center remains a resilient, long-term resource. This will be a place where health, nature, and human connection flourish and come together. KiezKreuzgang is not just a physical space; it embodies the spirit of community and healing, inviting everyone to take part in its offerings and cultivate a shared sense of well-being.
