Masterplan Berlin-Köpenick approved

The Berlin Senate has officially approved the masterplan for the former freight yard in Berlin-Köpenick in spring 2025, marking an important step in transforming this historic site into a lively new urban district. Building on our winning competition design from 2023, developed together with ADEPT and PGT, the masterplan outlines a diverse mixed-use neighbourhood with around 1,800 homes, a school, commercial areas, and a rich network of public spaces.

Drawing inspiration from the existing structures and the characteristic linearity of the railway landscape, the design introduces a system of green corridors that shape a connected and sustainable district. These green axes link a series of distinct public spaces: the Deichpark, which creates a soft transition towards the railway; a vibrant central plaza forming the social heart of the district; and the “Schwamm”, a multifunctional urban green space that doubles as a blue-green infrastructure, capturing and filtering rainwater while offering room for recreation.

We look forward to the next phase in realizing the transformation of the former Güterbahnhof into a thriving and resilient part of Berlin-Köpenick.
