Implementation of the restoration plan for Trompenburgh estate garden has started

In 2009, Karres en Brands was commissioned by the then administrator, the Government Buildings Agency, to develop a future vision for the Trompenburgh estate in ’s-Graveland. Based on the original 17th-century design, Karres en Brands created a hybrid plan restoring the ensemble of house, garden, and water. Both the original formal layout and the later landscaped woodland design are integrated into this vision.

The first phase was carried out in 2011: the restoration of the circular pond and the clearing of the central sightline. In the following years, ownership and management of the estate were transferred to the Stichting Monumentenbezit (SMB). On behalf of this foundation, Karres en Brands further developed the vision into a final design. The key elements of the plan include the reorganization of the historic framework of paths and tree-lined avenues, and the restoration of the house’s central position within the water.

The water surrounding the house will be restored to its original size, while the historic bridges will be carefully repaired. On the inner islands, contemporary gardens will appear within the 17th-century hedge structure. Whereas the islands were once accessible only by boat, two new pedestrian bridges now provide a subtle and modern connection.

Within the spatial framework of lime and elm trees, the original orchard will be replanted with a selection of historic fruit varieties. Around the orchard, the characteristic square of hedges will return, complemented by a border of flowering and fruit-bearing shrubs that add atmosphere while enhancing biodiversity.

If all goes according to plan, the garden restoration will be completed in the spring of 2026—bringing Trompenburgh back to life in the spirit of its 17th-century grandeur.
