Green Light for the New De Bulkenaar Landscape Park

Green Light for the New De Bulkenaar Landscape Park

With the arrival of the new Bravis Hospital on the outskirts of Roosendaal, De Bulkenaar Landscape Park is also taking shape. After years of intensive collaboration between the Municipality of Roosendaal, Bravis Hospital, and local residents, the Council of State issued a positive ruling on the plan on April 9, 2025. This marks the official start of the realization of both the hospital and the landscape park, which was designed by Karres en Brands.

Rooted in the DNA of the Landscape
The landscape park is deeply embedded in the unique characteristics of the local landscape. A careful analysis of different landscape layers reveals the richness that once defined this area, but has become fragmented over time. The design brings these lost and scattered structures back to life, forming the foundation for the park’s identity. In the western part, an old stream arm is being restored, and alder carrs, hedgerows, and tree-lined avenues are returning, creating small-scale landscape chambers. The eastern part focuses more on recreation and features a diverse grid of trees connecting to the Tolberg neighborhood. This creates a park where nature experience and recreation go hand in hand.

A Park That Grows Over Time
Time is the most important design factor in De Bulkenaar Landscape Park. The design is not solely aimed at the final result, but takes into account all phases of development. By creating the right conditions, different landscape types can evolve naturally. In cooperation with management, the desired image is gradually achieved, allowing the original landscape richness to be restored.

A well-thought-out structure of paths and landscape lines supports this development. The park is tailored to the needs of future users as well as current residents. There is room for local initiatives, and the integration of the hospital within the park enhances the healthy, green character of the environment for patients, staff, and local residents. De Bulkenaar Landscape Park thus becomes a living, growing landscape that invites use, connection, and involvement.

The ruling by the Council of State means that both Bravis and the Municipality of Roosendaal can proceed as planned. The municipality will begin this year with preparing the land for construction, so Bravis can start building the new hospital in 2026. The hospital is expected to be operational by 2029. For more information click here

The project is a collaboration between Karres en Brands, BK-Adviseurs, and Witteveen+Bos, and was developed in close coordination regarding the integration of the Bravis Hospital with BoschSlabbers Landscape Architects, Arcadis, and Team aan de Schie. Visualizations of the landscape park were created by Vivid-Vision.
