Karres en Brands is proud to be part of the German Pavilion at the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale with the project Kluyverpark at the campus Technical University in Delft. The project is featured as part of the exhibition "STRESSTEST". The exhibition tackles one of the most pressing issues of our time: the increasing overheating of cities and its severe consequences for humans, animals, and plant life. Rising temperatures threaten not only urban comfort but also critical infrastructure, including roads and buildings. The curatorial team aims to make this challenge tangible, engaging visitors in an immersive experience that highlights the urgency of climate-adapted urban development.
The Kluyverpark plan on the TU Delft campus is regarded as a model for sustainable area development. At its core lies the transformation of infrastructural space into a green campus environment, integrated within a campus-wide green-blue network. This network contributes to cooling, nature-inclusive development, and the strengthening of local biodiversity, supported by the use of native plant species. The design for Kluyverpark is also climate-adaptive: rainwater is captured and infiltrated through swales, green roofs, and permeable surfaces. This approach prevents sewer system overload and combats drought. At the same time, shaded green areas help to lower ambient temperatures and reduce heat stress. Kluyverpark combines ecological value with functional solutions for climate resilience and quality of life, offering a forward-looking and robust design for the campus.
The Venice Architecture Biennale 2025
As the world’s leading exhibition on architecture, urban planning, and spatial development, the Venice Architecture Biennale serves as a critical platform for discourse on future city design. The 19th edition, directed by Italian architect and urban planner Carlo Ratti, carries the theme “Intelligent. Natural. Artificial. Collective.” The detailed concept of Stress Test will be unveiled in early 2025, with the Biennale running from 10 May to 23 November 2025.
