Karres en Brands has won the invited competition for the public space ‘Backer en Rueb’

The Docklands of Breda, along the western banks of the Mark, will be transformed the coming years into an interesting area that combines living and working with an emphasis on art and culture and environmental development. One of the first steps in this large development is the transformation of the former machine factory ‘Backer en Rueb’. Investor Amvest bought this location in 2017 and intends to create a mixed living and working district on 4,5 ha, with approx. 450 dwellings and approx. 14.000 m2 GFA commercial space. The remaining office building and two industrial halls of the machine factory will be included in the redevelopment.

The Backer en Rueb district and the near Klaver Jansen area already give space to all kinds of creativity such as theatre, studios and exhibition space. It is Amvest’s ambition to turn the Backer en Rueb location into an ‘Art District’, where art re-surfaces in the buildings and the public space in a variety of ways.

Throughout the coming period Karres en Brands will develop, together with bureau Rijnboutt, Amvest and municipality of Breda the urban structure plan and design of the public space.
